on education is provided in its own section because
it is organized by school districts, which are different
from community districts. These data are from the 2002-2003

High schools in New York City fall within seven
high school districts. Some of the high school
districts do not correspond exactly to the boroughs. The Brooklyn district comprises only part of Brooklyn.
- Basis is comprised of Staten Island and part of Brooklyn.
- The Chancellor’s district is not geographically
based, but is comprised of high schools which
were placed directly under the Chancellor’s
oversight because of sustained poor performance.
- Alternative high schools provide programs that
are adapted to the needs of targeted student populations,
such as students who are overage, under-credited,
dropouts returning to school, new immigrants,
homeless, and truants.
