Information on education is provided in its own section because it is organized by school districts, which are different from community districts. These data are from the 2002-2003 school year.

Elementary and Middle School Search

The Elementary and Middle Schools information is organized by school district. New York City’s 32 school districts are grouped into ten regions, although information is still reported by school district. The ten regions are as follows:

Region 1=Community School Districts 9 and 10.
Region 2=Community School Districts 8, 11 and 12.
Region 3=Community School Districts 25, 26, 28 and 29.
Region 4=Community School Districts 24, 30 and 32.
Region 5=Community School Districts 19, 23 and 27.
Region 6=Community School Districts 17, 18 and 22.
Region 7=Community School Districts 20, 21 and 31.
Region 8= Community School Districts 13, 14, 15 and 16.
Region 9=Community School Districts 1, 2, 4 and 7.
Region 10=Community School Districts 3, 5 and 6.

High School Search

High schools in New York City fall within seven high school districts. Some of the high school districts do not correspond exactly to the boroughs. The Brooklyn district comprises only part of Brooklyn.

  • Basis is comprised of Staten Island and part of Brooklyn.
  • The Chancellor’s district is not geographically based, but is comprised of high schools which were placed directly under the Chancellor’s oversight because of sustained poor performance.
  • Alternative high schools provide programs that are adapted to the needs of targeted student populations, such as students who are overage, under-credited, dropouts returning to school, new immigrants, homeless, and truants.
